Hatfield Station Improvements – Phase 1
First Capital Connect successfully won £6m funding for the delivery of this scheme from the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Station Commercial Projects Fund in November 2011.
The bid clearly benefited from close working relationships with Network Rail, Hertfordshire County Council, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and Gascoyne Cecil Estates. Our thanks go to all the individuals concerned.
The agreed station improvements include:
Additionally, Network Rail are already progressing the design of a replacement footbridge which will incorporate lifts to both platforms as part of the £370m nationwide Department for Transport Access for All programme.

Station ‘Access for All’ Footbridge
A scheme is currently being developed by Network Rail for the provision of a new footbridge with lifts to provide step free access to both platforms at Hatfield Station This is part of a Department for Transport project to improve accessibility at stations and will replace the existing station bridge.
The key dates are:
Survey works and initial designs will be completed by Autumn 2012 and with the Construction planned for completion by Spring 2014.
Hatfield Station Improvements – Phase 2
The second phase of this important project is a new Bus and Taxi Interchange, along with highways improvements funded by Hertfordshire County Council.
This project is in the early stages of planning and over the coming months the varied needs of users will be assessed and taken into account when working with partners to develop final plans.
A public consultation exhibition is planned to take place in late Spring to showcase the proposals and give local residents, businesses and station users the opportunity to put forward their views before finalising designs.
Following completion of the brand new decked car park, the temporary decked South car park - built to provide parking while the new one is under construction - will be removed. This site will form part of the new Bus and Taxi Interchange.

- A temporary decked facility on the South car park,during the construction phase.
- Construction of a permanent decked car park onthe North car park to facilitate approx. 350 spaces,which will add a further 146 to the existing capacity.
- Extension of the station building to accommodate 3new retail units.

- A revised layout of the interchange to facilitate both current and expected future demand. Fully accessiblefacilities with new shelters and real time travelinformation.
- Improved pedestrian access
- Improved cycle parking
- A dedicated taxi rank with improved access
- Highway improvements to allow better pedestrian andcycle access to the station and links to Old Hatfield.
- Improvements to create a visually attractive and welcoming environment in and around the station.
