Hatfield Station Improvements – Phase 1

First Capital Connect successfully won £6m funding for the delivery of this scheme from the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Station Commercial Projects Fund in November 2011.

The  bid  clearly  benefited  from  close  working  relationships with  Network  Rail,  Hertfordshire  County  Council,  Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and Gascoyne Cecil Estates. Our thanks go to all the individuals concerned.

The agreed station improvements include:
  • A temporary decked facility on the South car park, during the construction phase.
  • Construction  of  a  permanent  decked  car  park  onthe North car park to facilitate approx. 350 spaces, which will add a further 146 to the existing capacity.
  • Extension of the station building to accommodate 3new retail units.
The  delivery  of  the  items  above  will  allow  Phase  2  of  the plan, which is funded by Hertfordshire County Council and will redevelop the South car park to facilitate a modern bus and taxi interchange. An expansion to the cycle parking facilities is also intended but subject to funding approvals.

Additionally,  Network  Rail  are  already  progressing  the design  of  a  replacement  footbridge  which  will  incorporate lifts  to  both  platforms  as  part  of  the  £370m  nationwide Department for Transport Access for All programme.

This project is in the early stages of planning and over the coming months the varied needs of users will be assessed and  taken  into  account  when  working  with  partners  to develop final plans.
